SAP Integration Suite business continuity: recovering critical integrations

An outage is not solved by simply redeploying. CPI recovery needs business priorities, known dependencies, accountable people and a test that proves the process is working again.

A useful plan does not try to restore everything at once. It defines which interface protects a critical operation, how long it can stop and what evidence confirms a correct recovery.

1) Classify interfaces by impact, not technology

Start with the process: payroll, employee onboarding, orders, invoicing or procurement. For each interface, identify business owner, source and target, operating window and the consequence of pending messages.

2) An iFlow backup is not full recovery

Exported artifacts help, but they do not replace environment configuration, certificates, technical users, destinations, Cloud Connector, external endpoints or operating decisions. Maintain a versioned dependency inventory without storing secrets in documentation or repositories.

3) Write a first-hour runbook

The runbook must state who declares the incident, what is checked first, how impact is contained and who is escalated to. Add monitoring links, criteria to pause or retry, and a communication channel.

4) Recover without duplicating business events

After connectivity returns, risk shifts to accumulated messages. Reprocessing requires idempotency, a controlled time range and reconciliation with the target system. An iFlow finishing is not proof that the business outcome exists once and completely.

5) Test before the incident

Schedule bounded exercises: a simulated destination outage, an expired certificate in a controlled environment or a sample reprocessing run. Record real recovery times, ambiguous steps and undocumented dependencies, then assign improvements.

Continuity checklist

  1. Interface catalog with business priority and owner.
  2. Agreed RTO/RPO for critical processes.
  3. Configuration and dependencies recorded per environment.
  4. First-hour runbook and escalation path.
  5. Reprocessing and reconciliation tested without duplicates.

Business continuity does not remove incidents. It makes recovery orderly, verifiable and aligned with business decisions.
